Welcome to South Africa

We arrived in South Africa last night about 10:30 PM(1:30 PM Pacific/4:30 Eastern).  The flight from Amsterdam down here was a VERY long flight.

The order of countries flown over, as best I can tell was as follows: Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Italy, Algeria, Niger, Nigeria, off the west coast of Africa, Gabon, Some country I can’t remember, Angola, Namibia, South Africa. Oddly, we turned off the coast and flew over the water as we passed Congolese (formerly Zaire) airspace.  I guess KLM wanted to avoid that country.  We also did a slightly circuitous route over Nigeria avoiding the city of Abuja.  That’s the place in Nigeria with the political/fighting issues causing oil to be so high right now.

Getting here was problematic as the trip started out rather bumpy with a panic call FROM the airline Friday afternoon.  After jumping through hoops to get to the airport to make an earlier flight that THE AIRLINE put me on, they nearly involuntarily bumped me from the flight THEY had changed me to.  Nice.  Then we boarded and promptly sat on the ground waiting for the FAA to clear us for takeoff.  Then we got to Detroit and taxied forever, then had to sit at the gate waiting for some equipment to move.  Then I had to run across Detroit airport where I barely made the flight to Amsterdam.

After a short tour of that city and a tour of Rotterdam, we awoke yesterday and flew for 11 hours to our present location.  Driving the car was not problematic as there was VERY little traffic, so driving on the left side of the road wasn’t and issue. TQE did have issues with the turn signal being on the wrong side, but overall he did o.k. contrary to the fact that I was laughing at him.  My turn to be laughed at comes soon.

Today it is off to Robben Island where Nelson Mandella was held prisoner.  After that we’re off to who knows what?

Another diary entry at some point, but don’t count on regular updates. 🙂
