The Cannes Film… er… Porn Festival

I'm a fan of film festivals. The appeal to me is that you can see movies there that wouldn't get a showing at any mainstream movie theater at any price. It was at a film festival where I saw the movie, "Eating out" about a straight man pretending to be gay so he could hook-up with his friends fag-hag. Low budget, but overall a funny story.

It appears as if the Cannes Film Festival is starting to take a decidedly pornographic twist. While I don't mind sex in movies as part of the story line, the following description from an article I read about the Cannes twist was unsettling but at the same time slightly amusing.

"…U.S. director John Cameron Mitchell, who has brought "Shortbus" to Cannes, agrees that young people are increasingly using the Internet to replace real sex.

In Shortbus, he has collected an ensemble of non-professional actors who engage in real on-screen sex and masturbation in an attempt to de-mystify the subject. He does not consider his film to be pornography.

He said that the United States had a puritanical view of sex which turned it into an issue in young people's minds. In one particularly provocative scene in his film, three gay men engage in a sex session while singing "The Star-Spangled Banner".

This is definitely a case where the ultra-conservative folks in the US will be unable to sing, "Oh say can you see…" as they will be too busy scratching their eyes out. Though I think I could argue that would be a good thing.

  1. So, Director John Cameron Mitchell does not think on screen sex and masturbation is pornography? One wonders just what he thinks IS pornography. Three Gay men engage in sex while singing The Star Spangled Banner. Oh great! Now they will hate us for our lifestyle and accuse us of being unpatriotic actually!

  2. Cynical Queer Says:

Somehow I don't think the theocratic right will be able to tar them as unpatriotic.

  3. They considered it unpatriotic when it was just sung in Spanish. To have it sung by three queers during sex just blows their f*cking minds.

  4. Cynical Queer Says:

    It certainly blows something…

  5. Pornography is usually self defined. There are magazines in Germany which would be defined as child pornography in the US, but here are not.

And no, I’m not buying any of them to bring to the states. Ain’t going to happen.

  6. Cynical Queer Says:

    Don't want 'em.

I have a variety of kinks, etc., but nothing involving children. They will learn all they need to at an appropriate age AND from someone other than me.
